Homework
Each day, first graders will complete a math worksheet in class with the teacher’s assistance. The back side contains the homework to be completed at night with parental assistance. Math homework items will be very similar to items completed on the front. Please allow your child to complete the worksheet as independently as possible. Then, check over it helping your child correct any mistakes. Your child should always complete homework in pencil, unless otherwise stated in the directions. Homework will be completed in class on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Please go through your child’s take home and homework folders each night. Remove graded papers from the take home folder and return your child’s completed homework to school the next day.
Help your child study his or her spelling words each night and read the basal story each night as well. The basal test is on Thursday each week and spelling tests are on Friday each week.
Your child will bring home an AR book each day. The chosen book should be read at home and written on the Book Worm List. Please circle the number beside the AR book title on the Book Worm List. Books must be returned to school the next day whether completed or not. This will eliminate misplacing our classroom books.
Your child will be bringing home a reading fluency passage each week. As your child reads, draw a line through any word missed. Stop the timer after one minute and count to see how many words your child read correctly in that minute. Write the number of words read correctly under the day of the week it was read. Continue to read the story passage each night, timing your child for one minute, to see if he/she can beat the previous nights score. Return the passage to school on Friday each week.
